When I was in middle school (which right there should tell you this is not going to be a pretty story), I had scoliosis. Wearing a back brace for a year and a half was traumatic for a girl who really just wanted to fly under the radar and not stand out. When my mom took me for scheduled visits to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Dallas, we would stay with my aunt, who owned the musical Oliver! I became obsessed with that film. As hard of a time I had with my scoliosis, I looked at the poor orphan boy as a kid who had real problems. Young Oliver Twist helped me through that difficult time.
Fast-forward to a few years ago, when I decided to write a contemporary retelling of the classic. I wondered what a girl would do in Oliver’s situation today—a teenaged foster kid instead of a young workhouse orphan. I decided to make it more modern by creating a gang of hackers rather than pickpockets. But I wanted to keep the desire for family, love, and acceptance that’s prevalent throughout the original Oliver Twist. And, since I had a little childhood crush on the Dodger kid in the film, I was inspired to write a romance between that character (Z) and Olivia.
Once Olivia Twisted was published, I received many requests from readers for a sequel. I decided to write the story of what happened between the end of the story and the epilogue, which I got most questions about and always knew in the back of my mind that I wanted to write. Olivia Decoded will be in bookstores on Sept. 6, and I hope fans of Olivia Twisted enjoy it just as much as the first!
To celebrate the upcoming sequel, the e-book of Olivia Twisted is on sale this week for only 99 cents at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Apple iTunes store! If you haven’t picked it up yet or if you’d like to gift a copy to a friend, now is a great time!
